Thompson Family Foundation Announces Formation of The 941 Project

February 4, 2022

Oakland, CA – To commemorate the hard work, perseverance, and dedication displayed by basketball superstar Klay Thompson during his recovery from multiple major injuries, the Thompson Family Foundation is proud to announce the formation of The 941 Project to assist and support re-entry to the workplace for individuals from disadvantaged situations. The project will provide employment education, interview training, career development support and networking opportunities to workers who have suffered career setbacks but have the desire to return to work.

941 days after sustaining the first of two-consecutive career-threatening injuries, Klay was able to return to the court on January 9, 2022. By enduring the adversity of a two-and-a-half year rehabilitation, Klay gained an overwhelming appreciation for how hard it is for people to recover from adversity and the resources that are necessary to help people make their own career ‘comeback.’

Dapper Labs (the makers of NBA Top Shot), CrossChq, Kaiser Permanente, Fanatics, Waiakea, Cash App, and Mercedes have committed to being founding partners of The 941 Project.

“I am forever thankful for the support so many have given me over the 941 days I worked to get back on the court,” said Thompson. “During this time, I developed a new appreciation for just how hard it is to overcome major life challenges and the difficulty many people face when they are out of work and trying to find their way back.”

Phase one of the project will provide support to Bay Area organizations Career Circle and Defy Ventures in their efforts to assist former military veterans, single mothers and previously incarcerated persons with finding employment. CrossChq will provide free personal assessments and networking opportunities to assist individuals with their re-entry to the workforce.

“We are thrilled to launch The 941 Project,” said TFF Trustee Mychel Thompson. “Klay’s journey has been an inspiration to so many and has highlighted that everyone can benefit from the help of others as they begin their own personal comeback story.”
